Sir Walter Scott

Words and Music: Sir Walter Scott

25th February 2022 @ 19:30 - 21:30

| £12.00 – £15.00

SOLD OUT

A candle-lit evening event of poetry, prose and music to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Sir Walter Scott. Short excerpts from Scott’s works will be read by Alasdair Hutton (‘the Voice of the Tattoo”) and Brian Taylor (formerly of BBC Scotland). Three new choral settings of Scott’s words by Nigel Don will be given by a choir led by Stephen Doughty.

Lochinvar – bouncy jolly tale of no great substance – the choral equivalent of a concert overture. The text is Lady Heron’s song from Scott’s historical romance poem, Marmion.

Rosabelle
 – a song about priorities, choices and tragedy. Text from The Lay of the Last Minstrel, featuring Scott’s famous description of Rosslyn Chapel.

O Caledonia – a rousing anthem about identity, both Scottish and beyond – Scott’s equivalent of Burns’ A Man’s a Man. Text from The Lay of the Last Minstrel.

The Choir for this special evening’s performance has been assembled especially for this anniversary celebration and will be directed by Stephen Doughty.
