Knight on Horseback

In the corner of a window is a carving showing a knight on horseback

Type:

Carving

Location:

In Chapel
South Aisle

The knight on horseback is armed with a spear and behind him is a figure holding a cross. It has been suggested that they represent the story of William ‘the Seemly’ St Clair, who is said to have carried back a portion of the true cross, or ‘holy rood’, to Scotland.

Alternatively, the passenger may be Quen Margaret and the knight Bartholomew Ladislaus, a companion on that journey. It was Margaret’s husband, King Malcolm Canmore, who encouraged the St Clairs to settle in Scotland.
