Maize
This carving has been described as showing maize but mystery surrounds it, as the plant was not known in Scotland when the Chapel was being built.
Type: Carving
Location: In ChapelSouth Aisle
Inside the arch over a stained glass window is a carving said to be maize, but this plant was unknown in Britain at the time the Chapel was built.
There is a theory that Prince Henry, the grandfather of the Chapel’s founder, travelled to America nearly 100 years before Christopher Columbus and shared knowledge of what he had seen with Sir William.
